Hello again! FanWorks is once again on the move; we hope, fingers crossed, for the last time.
FanWorks will hold its next on-site convention the weekend of August 12th - 14th, 2022.
Please read on for more information on the move to 2022:
In March, we announced that FanWorks 2020 was moving to March 19 - 21st, 2021. (You can read more about that in the March announcement post, here.) We moved as quickly as possible to reschedule as far out as the hotel would let us at the time, both so that we could act (hopefully) before attendees had booked travel, and so that con staff could focus on their individual needs.
Things have changed a lot since March. In June, we checked in with the hotel to look into the possibility of rescheduling further out given the evolving circumstances, and were fortunately able to do so.
The new dates are August 12th - 14th, 2022. These dates have been locked in with the hotel. We are contracted and signed on them. We can't guarantee that there won't be any future date changes that further postpone the con from those dates; right now, there isn't much that anyone can guarantee about what the near future will bring. But given that the new dates are more than two years out, we at the very least hope that in August 2022, we will finally be able to share physical con spaces with one another again. (And we do guarantee that the con won't be rescheduled to be any sooner. Even if 2021 turns out to be a fine time to have an event, the next on-site FanWorks con will happen no earlier than August 12th - 14th, 2022.)
If you are currently registered to attend FanWorks, your registration will automatically be rolled forward to August 2022. If you will be unable to attend the new August 2022 dates and would like to request a refund of your membership, please email jen@fanworkscon.com by August 1, 2020.
The decision to reschedule from March 2021 to August 2022 was driven by a few things:
We apologize to anyone disappointed by the fact that there will be no on-site FanWorks convention in 2020 or 2021. All we can do is make the best decisions we have with the information we have on hand, and to take the absence of information into account, too. We don't know what 2021 will be like. (We don't know what 2022 will be like.) We're doing our best to navigate the situation with attendee safety in mind, and will continue to do so.
*
Our plan going forward is to break up the time between FanWorks 2019 and FanWorks 2022 with virtual cons.
The first FanWorks Online will be October 23rd - 25th, 2020.
Registration dates for FanWorks Online 2020, registration costs, and a calendar of vid & zine submission deadlines will be coming in the next two weeks. We'll be hard at work in the meantime updating our website and materials. Please bear with us if this takes some time; circumstances being what they are, everything is likely to take a little bit longer than usual.
There will be a premieres vidshow at the online con, and a con zine. We strongly encourage anyone planning out their next few months of vids / stories / art / etc. to consider sending a premiering vid, fic, or artwork to the con. Details on deadlines and submissions guidelines are coming soon.

The decision to reschedule from March 2021 to August 2022 was driven by a few things:
- March increasingly looks like too soon a time to expect to hold a 100+ person indoor event. March is also not a great time to ask people to travel to Chicago; it was the best we could do at the time, but we would rather not be putting on a con during Chicago winter.
- We could have moved the con to August 2021 and only skipped one year. But if we had done so, we would have been taking a significant gamble on public health factors we have no way to confidently predict - not just in August 2021, but earlier in the year, when con planning happens.
- We don't know at this point whether or not we'll be able to reschedule again if there is an absolute need to do so. If this was our only chance to (re-)reschedule, we needed to make it count as much as we possibly could.
