The deadline for panel submissions is Friday, July 15th.

The submission form covers panels for both the online and Chicago cons. If you're attending virtually, your panel(s) will be considered for the online con; if you're attending in Chicago, your panel(s) will be considered for the Chicago con. If you aren't sure yet which con you'll be attending, you can indicate that on the form, and we'll work that out with you if your panel is chosen for the schedule.

You can submit topics without volunteering to moderate them, but panels with volunteer moderators will be given priority when selecting panels. This year, because of the newness of the hybrid format, panels will be chosen by con staff. We'll be selecting panels with the goal of getting an even spread of panels for each of our fanwork tracks, across both parts of the hybrid con (Chicago and online).

The five programming tracks at FanWorks are:

Art - drawing, painting, manips, gifs, graphic design, cosplay, textile art, models, jewelry, decor - the track page has many more examples!
Audio - podfic, podcasts, fan music, filk, fanmixes
Community - platforms (social media, blogs, discord etc.), events (exchanges, fests, cons), curation (recs, wikis), and broader topics related to fanworks that don't fit a specific track
Video - fanvids, edits, meta videos, fan filmed content, supercuts
Writing - fanfic (writing, reading, beta), meta, poetry, zines

These are just examples of the kinds of things that might fit into each track - not exhaustive lists! If you have an idea for a panel but aren't sure where it fits, take your best guess when filling out the form, and we can take it from there.

We can't do FanWorks without panels, and we can't do panels without you! Any con attendee interested in submitting a panel (or multiple panels) is encouraged to do so. If you have any questions about panel programming, please email fanworksprogramming@gmail.com.

FanWorks will be in a hybrid format, with programming taking place both on-site in Chicago and online, on our usual platforms (Discord, Zoom, and the FanWorks website). The con will run on Central time in all formats.

Programming at FanWorks has three main types:

Panels: discussions, presentations, workshops; suggested and run by con attendees
Vidshows: themed shows, suggested and curated by attendee VJs; vidder-submitted shows, typically VJed by con staff
Events: games, meals, parties, fanwork-focused activities

Things will look a little different from FanWorks 2019 this year. We're doing our best to adapt con programming for the current circumstances and working out ways to balance the online and on-site cons so that everyone has con programming to attend.

We're still working out some of the details of this year's events – particularly online events, which will be scheduled closer to the con and are likely to include past events like Zoom Pictionary.

This year, we're taking a break from Sparkle Motion and the vid singalong. We'll also be switching from the food buffets attendees may remember from 2019 to boxed lunches that can be eaten outside the con space. These are part of our overall risk reduction measures for 2022, and we hope to return to dance parties and communal meals in future years.

The online con will take place primarily on Discord, with panels on Zoom and vidshow streams on the FanWorks website.

In Chicago, at the SpringHill Suites O'Hare, the con event space is on two floors. We'll have a full map of the space and accessibility information for the hotel closer to the con, but for now, here's a brief overview of the con space:

Scheduling

The con weekend will run on Central time, both in Chicago and online.

Unlike past virtual cons, which focused on the weekends, the August online con will match Chicago's schedule, with main programming running Friday - Sunday. The overall schedule format has three 2-hour blocks of daytime programming (with 1-hour lunch and afternoon breaks), a 2-hour dinner break, and a 2- to 3-hour block of nighttime events.

Many, many thanks to all of our panelists and VJs for giving us a great schedule of things to do and watch and discuss this weekend; it's been a rough year for everyone, and we appreciate more than ever all of your contributions to making the con happen.

Panel nominations are now open!

Feel free to submit as many topics as you like. Panel selection will work similarly to last year, with the top five panels chosen through a survey sent to con attendees and the remainder of the schedule filled in through staff selection to ensure a variety of topics.

You can submit topics without volunteering to moderate them, but only panels with volunteer moderators will be put on the survey sent to con attendees for panel selection; panel topics without moderators will still be considered when staff are choosing additional panels to fill out the schedule.

Because FanWorks is virtual this year, there will be fewer panels than at the in-person con, but the goal is still to have a fairly even spread of panels for each of the usual tracks:

Art & Crafting:

• Drawing, painting, and other 2D art in digital and physical mediums

• Manips, gifs, icons, and other digital manipulation of images

• Graphic design for websites, merchandise (including stickers, pins, shirts etc.), and more

FanWorks 2021 will be happening online, October 1st - 3rd!

Registration for the virtual con will be $20. The cost of attendance pays for the platforms, panel captioning services, and other paid features we use for the virtual con, and goes toward defraying annual overheads in years without physical conventions.

We'll make an announcement here and on the con twitter (@fanworkscon) when registration opens; we plan to open registration in July.

We're currently in the process of updating our website for this year's con, so please pardon our dust while we do so!

We also had some construction dust in the off-season: if you sent an email to any of our fanworkscon.com inboxes during the con hiatus (between November 2020 and June 2021), your messages may not have been received, as we had a mail server switch along the way. Those issues should now be resolved, so any email you send from this point forward is going to active email inboxes. (Apologies! It's been a long, exhausting off-season for all of us.) If there's anything you sent an email about that you did not get a response to, and you still need or would like a reply to your message, please email us again and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

2020 is happening to us all of the time - in every aspect of our lives, fandom included. This panel will be a group discussion on the impact of *waves hands at the world* on our fannishness - whether fandom has been an escape / coping mechanism or very much the opposite, the works we have or haven't made, the attention spans we do or don't have to engage with new fandoms or new works, the cons we haven't gone to, the state of our social media timelines, and everything else along the way.

Costuming With Craft Foam (Arts & Crafting | moderated by corbae):
Learn the basics of using craft foam (EVA) in cosplay. Follow along as we create a pair of bracers, starting by making a pattern and finishing with tips on how to paint. A list of materials will be provided so you can make your own pair at home.

Build-A-Bot (Arts & Crafting, Community | moderated by ritz):
Learn how to build a Twitter bot with zero coding experience or knowledge! Attendees will learn how to build a bot that generates fic or art prompts (here's an example of one: https://twitter.com/promptmetender). Attendees will also get a quick introduction to other (coding required) bot building resources.

Hold the Presses! Or, An Introduction to Fanbinding (Arts & Crafting, Community | moderated by ArmoredSuperHeavy & Eric Odense):
This panel will discuss ficbinding as a transformative and archival act of fandom. Ficbinding interacts with sexist and homophobic censorship, promotes the toehold of fandom as queer literacy, and demonstrates the value of grassroots media. This panel will contribute to the burgeoning field of fandom studies by placing ficbinding in a continuity of countercultural creators and activists and illustrating the necessity for fandom preservation efforts.

"Does Lossy mean Bad?" COMPRESSION EXPLAINED! (Arts & Crafting, Audio, Video | moderated by bessyboo):
If you create any kind of digital art in audiovisual formats, you're probably familiar with the idea of some formats being "lossy" or "lossless." But what do these things mean, how do they actually work, and why should it matter to you? Join bessyboo for a tech workshop on how to make sure you're putting out the best quality files you can at the right file sizes.

Back On My Bullshit (Community | moderated by sisabet):
You think you are completely finished and have this fandom out of your system. You don’t. You think this one pairing type was just an aberration. It wasn’t. You think you are out and it pulls you back in - Time is a flat circle and nothing truly ends, even your bullshit about X.

Fashionably Late: Navigating Established Fandoms (Community | moderated by sweetestdrain):
We all come to fandoms in our own time, and sometimes that might be months (or years, or decades) after the fandom's popularity has peaked. Whether it's the joy of discovering a cornucopia of amazing fic and art ready-made for us to devour, or [gif of Troy Barnes walking into chaotic room on fire], we'll discuss these experiences as well as the pros and cons of making fanworks for your exciting new love when your fellow fans have been around much longer -- or moved on entirely.

Vidding 101: Learn How To Vid Without Editing (Video | moderated by AbsoluteDestiny):
Many Vidding 101 sessions focus on the technical side of vidding - preparing footage, making clips, using editing software. This panel isn't about that. This is about combining footage you'd like to vid with music you think might work and finding out if it does. Is the music a good fit? Does it work with this POV? Does it create the right kind of feeling? Does the combination do something surprising? No special software is required to do this and we'll be doing some live vidding experiments during the panel.

Writing Immortal Historical Characters (Writing | moderated by Raine Wynd):
Tips and tricks on writing immortal characters with long, complex histories.

Important note about vidshow deadlines:

Please note: we're putting the Premieres deadline as close to the con as vid tech allows so that we can give vidders the maximum amount of time to work on vids. We want as many Premieres vids as possible, and welcome submissions from any vidder, regardless of whether or not you register for the virtual con.

However, because we're pushing the deadline as far back as it can go, there will be no extensions this year. If you find yourself running a few hours late on deadline night, you can contact us at fanworksvidtech@gmail.com and we'll do our best to help; anything more than that, we won't be able to accommodate, as we'll be on a very tight tech schedule. We've built in all the vidding time we can; there is no deadline flexibility this year.

FanWorks is moving back one week to October 23 - 25th, to avoid conflicting with FIYAHCON 2020 for our attendees who want to do both.

(Our deadline schedule is now set and we won't be adjusting our dates again, so if other conflicts arise, we apologize! There's a lot going on virtually right now.)

The con will run on Eastern time, with a daily welcome video at 11:30AM and programming / social activities beginning each day at noon.

Here is what you can expect from virtual con programming:

Friday: A mostly informal day of online hangouts, icebreakers, viewing parties, and a groupwatch of last year's Premieres show, culminating in both Eastern and Pacific nighttime runs of Sparkle Motion, the FanWorks dance party (now in your living room!).

Saturday: Five hours of panel programming and an evening Premieres vid showcase, plus themed daytime vidshows, ongoing activities, and late night Halloween-themed programming.

Sunday: Five hours of panel programming, a cosplay showcase, and closing events, plus themed daytime vidshows, ongoing activities, and evening socials.

We know that many people will have to work on Friday, and that's okay! There are no panels or debuting vidshows during daytime programming on Friday. If you live in earlier time zones, don't work that day, or otherwise have flexibility to socialize, there will be things to do; if you can't make Friday daytime activities, there will be lots to do at other times throughout the weekend.

Registration for the 2020 FanWorks virtual con will be $20. Registration for this and future virtual cons is separate from the 2022 con in Chicago, so even if you are registered for that event, you will need to separately register if you want to attend the virtual con. The registration fee will cover our video hosting costs and go toward off-setting annual overheads that would normally be covered by con registration.

Registration for the 2020 FanWorks virtual con will open on Sunday, August 30th. We'll be working on updating our website and materials for the virtual con in the meantime, but if you have any questions, you can always shoot an email to jen@fanworkscon.com.

Please take note of a FanWorks schedule change:

The Cosplay Showcase will now kick off the Friday night festivities at 8pm, followed by our wizard rock musical guest Tonks & the Aurors at 9PM.

Saturday afternoon will now include Fandom Bingo!

Participants in Fandom Bingo will get bingo cards with fandoms in the squares. We'll play short clips from the source (labeled with the fandom name) in lieu of calling squares. If a fandom on the screen matches one on your card, mark it off! We'll have an assortment of small prizes for bingo winners.

There will be two separate Fandom Bingo games: one at 4pm and one at 5pm. These will be timed to match the panels, so that people in the 4pm panel can attend 5pm bingo (if they wish to), and vice versa. Each game will have different cards, so if you want to play both games, you can!

FanWorks 2019 Con Schedule

The schedule can be filtered by panel track by clicking the tick boxes at the top.

Attendees can also make personal schedules on the dashboard. You can click as many panels, vidshows, and events as you want to (or might want to!) attend. Your selections will auto-save, so all you have to do once you've made them is click on the personal schedule link on that page to see your own personalized con schedule!

(Once you've set a personal schedule, it will always display directly on your dashboard, along with an edit button and a link to the page with just your schedule.)

If you hover over a panel, vidshow, or event name or tap it on mobile, the panel description will be displayed.

For this first year, we opted not to schedule a panel in every track at every hour, and to spread panels out a bit to give us all more opportunities to attend programming and fewer hard choices on what to attend. That may change in future years, but at least for this year's con, we hope it helps!

If you are registered to attend FanWorks, you should have received an email with a link to the panel voting form and instructions on how to vote. There are a lot of great panels up for voting, so please read through the selections and choose your favorites! Panel selection plays a big role in shaping the con and we encourage all attendees to participate.

If you haven't registered yet, you can do so on the con website. Once you register, you will receive an email with instructions on how to vote on panels. If you want to register in time to vote, please register by Saturday, April 13th to make sure the instructions for voting get to you in time.

Hi, all! It’s time to start thinking about what we would like to discuss, learn about, and enthuse over in this year’s FanWorks panels! Panel brainstorming is a great way to get inspiration for panel topics and bounce ideas off one another. (It’s also a good time to find co-mods for panels you’re interested in leading, or to get mods to take on panel ideas you have but don’t want to lead yourself!)

Two commons types of panels are group discussions and presentations:

A discussion panel is driven by audience participation. The moderators act mostly as discussion leaders, working to keep the discussion focused and ensure that a variety of voices are heard.
An instruction or presentation panel is largely or entirely focused on moderator presentation, with moderators leading the panel audience through specific techniques, aesthetics, platforms, software, and so on. These panels may include some audience discussion, if time allows.

If you have an idea for a panel in a different format, that’s fine! Ideas for panels that could fit into multiple tracks (i.e., a panel about fic trailers, including content relevant to both the Writing and Video tracks) are also fine.

The standard panel length is 45 minutes; panels start on the hour with fifteen minute (or longer) breaks in-between. If you have ideas for panels that might work better as two hour panels, feel free to toss them in! Sometimes scheduling allows for longer panel sessions, and these can be great for digging into discussions or material at greater length. (Due to time constraints, these types of panels are likely to be limited.)

Panel topics can range from introductory to advanced. If you want to brainstorm ideas for panels to introduce people to your favorite kind of fanwork, you can! If you’re interested in brainstorming ideas for panels on specific techniques or more in depth topics, you can do that too.

Panel nominations open on March 17th and run until March 31st. Until then, brainstorm away in the posts below!
