[personal profile] trelkez posting in [community profile] fanworks
Hello, everyone! It's been an interesting month for us on staff - apologies for the delay in getting the con schedule live. Many, many thanks to all of our panelists and VJs for giving us a great schedule of things to do and watch and discuss this weekend; it's been a rough year for everyone, and we appreciate more than ever all of your contributions to making the con happen.

---> The 2021 con schedule can be viewed here. <---

Things to know about the schedule (all times Eastern):

Friday

Panels and key programming officially kick off on Saturday morning, but for those around on Friday (including our attendees in earlier time zones), there will be some things to do!

  • Zoom Social: Jen will be hanging out on Zoom from 12 - 2pm to welcome people to the con! This is just a low-key time to poke your head in and say hi to anyone who might be around. (If you're working on Friday and want some company, you're welcome to drop in and quietly coexist with us! Interaction not required.)
  • Comfort Blanket: We had too many vid submissions this year to fit everything onto Saturday and Sunday, so as a way to show as many submitted vids as possible, Comfort Blanket will be debuting on Friday from 3 - 5pm. There will be a 12am - 2am replay for the Pacific time zone; anyone who can't make either time is welcome to schedule their own replay on Discord.
  • FanWorks vidshow replays: 2019's Quiet Morning and 2020's Thirst will also be playing on Friday afternoon, bookending Comfort Blanket with warm fuzzies and, well ... thirst.
  • Welcome to FanWorks & Pictionary: At 7pm, there will be a brief con welcome on Zoom, immediately followed by Fannish Pictionary (mod: elipie).

Saturday

Vidshows start at 11am on Saturday, with panels kicking off at noon.

  • Premieres is the highlight of Saturday: a vidshow of entirely new vids making their debut at FanWorks. Premieres runs from 7 - 9:30pm. This year, Premieres has been broken up into smaller sections to allow for more breaks. That looks like:
    • Part One (30 min)
    • - 5 minute break -
    • Part Two (30 min)
    • - 10 minute halftime break -
    • Part Three (30 min)
    • - 5 minute break -
    • Part Four (30 min)

Sunday

Vidshows start at 11am on Sunday, with panels kicking off at 1pm.

  • Premieres Replay: For attendees in earlier time zones (or anyone who wants to join), there will be a scheduled replay of Premieres starting at 8:30am.
  • FanWorks Wrap-up: There will be a wrap-up panel on Zoom at 7pm; we'll conclude this year's con and discuss the outlook for 2022. This is unlikely to take the full time slot - we'll try to keep it brief!
  • Vidder's Choice & Year in Vids: The third hours of Vidder's Choice and The Year in Vids will run from 8 - 10pm, following the wrap-up panel. This is a little later than we'd normally run vidshows on a Sunday, but the video schedule is packed full this year - if you like vids, don't forget to swing by on Sunday to catch the last shows of the con!

Panels:

Thanks again to everyone who pitched in to fill out the panel schedule! This year's panel topics are:

Consuming Fanworks in the Darkest Timeline
track: Community
mod: Beth
description: The pandemic changed everything, including how many of us interact with fandom. Reactions ran the gamut from people who consumed ravenously during quarantine to those who couldn’t engage with fanworks at all. Maybe you spent all your time rewatching your comfort vids; maybe you specifically sought out brand new content. Did you avoid pandemic & apocalypse-themed material or seek it out? Let’s have a conversation about how we experienced fanworks during these troubling times and how it’s changed us going forward.

Creating Fanworks in the Pandemic
track: Community
mod: solarcat
description: The pandemic has affected everyone's ability to get shit done - some people haven't been able to create at all, where others have been able to spin out more than ever, due to a combination of factors - the state of our mental health and the amount of free time we have, among other things. This panel will be a conversation about how our motivation to create, and what we gravitate towards creating, has changed as a result of the pandemic.

Creative Vidsong Finding
track: video
mod: kuwdora
Description: So you want to make a vid. You have show/character/idea in mind but no song and no clue where to start. In this panel we will discuss the questions you can ask yourself to jump start the your search for your vid song. From there we'll use your answers to show some effective methods for discovering music with the right tone (and maybe even lyrics) for your potential vid.

Elements of Musicality in Vidding

track: Video
mods: dirty diana & elipie
description: Music is an important part of vidding, but how does a well-crafted song shape our vidding choices? How do the elements that lift our emotions and make us want to put a song on repeat interact with visual clips to form a unified creative work? We'll talk about rhythm, structure, and more, and how we use these to express ourselves through vidding.

Food as Fanwork
track: Art & Crafting
mod: corbae
description: Have you ever baked a cellular peptide cake with mint frosting, recreated one of Hannibal’s dinner parties, or mixed up a pan galactic gargle blaster? Have you created recipes for fanworks you’ve made or enjoyed? Join us for a celebration of food and drink as fanworks. Bring your favorite recipes, share your food triumphs, and tell us your future meal plans.

Introduction to Watercolour
track: Art & Crafting
mod: Cherry
description: Interested in experimenting with a new medium in your fandom? This panel will introduce you to watercolours and cover basic colour theory. No artistic experience or background required.

Podfic 101: Audacity Workshop
track: Audio
mod: revolutionaryjo
description: A practical demonstration of how to edit a short podfic using Audacity geared toward anyone new to or interested in starting podficcing.

The Scenic Route: Using Landscape and Setting in Vids

track: Video
mod: sweetestdrain
description: It's easy to focus solely on characters when we make a vid, but the world in which they live can be just as important. Whether it's minimal use of establishing shots or a vid in which the background takes the forefront, how can vids best utilize shots of scenery -- oceans, mountains, cityscapes, etc. -- to add visual interest and symbolic or emotional depth to our understanding of the character or situation? What about other elements of setting such as long corridors, vast halls, and rooms either luxurious or stark? We'll explore some examples and discuss what setting can do for a vid and what works well.

Structure of a Vidshow
track: Video
mod: Trelkez
description: Have you ever submitted a vid to a con and wondered how the VJ decided where to place it in the vidshow? We'll look at some of this year's vidder-submitted shows - Premieres, Year in Vids, and Vidder's Choice - and discuss their structure, flow, and the mechanics of putting together a vidshow when the vids have already been chosen for you.

DIY Panels

There will also be a way on the con Discord to sign up for DIY panels - we can't provide Zoom mods for those, but anyone who wants to do a DIY panel is welcome to pick a time and place, and we'll help you publicize it on con channels!
