FanWorks 2021 is moving to the weekend of October 1st - 3rd!

This is a change from our previous mid-September dates. We apologize for any confusion this may cause, and promise that these are our final dates. Thanks to this year's virtual con staff for being flexible and working quickly to shift our con schedule when needed. <3

Our vid and zine submission deadlines are also changing, to give fanwork creators as much time as possible to submit works! The deadlines are moving forward a week, and are now:

Non-premiering vids: August 15th
Premieres vids: September 5
Zine submissions: September 5

The pinned post with info on vidshows, programming, and deadlines has been updated with these dates. You can read that post here for all of the current con information!

Registration for FanWorks 2021 will open in July.

FanWorks 2021 will be happening online, October 1st - 3rd!

Registration for the virtual con will be $20. The cost of attendance pays for the platforms, panel captioning services, and other paid features we use for the virtual con, and goes toward defraying annual overheads in years without physical conventions.

We'll make an announcement here and on the con twitter (@fanworkscon) when registration opens; we plan to open registration in July.

Some things to know about this year's con:

Vidshows

This is an overview of shows that vidders can submit to this year! This is not inclusive of every vidshow or vid event we'll be having, so check back for future announcements on other shows, including themed vidshows. (If you're interested in submitting a themed vidshow topic for con programming, check the programming deadlines below.)

FanWorks 2022

A brief update on next year's con )

We're currently in the process of updating our website for this year's con, so please pardon our dust while we do so!

We also had some construction dust in the off-season: if you sent an email to any of our fanworkscon.com inboxes during the con hiatus (between November 2020 and June 2021), your messages may not have been received, as we had a mail server switch along the way. Those issues should now be resolved, so any email you send from this point forward is going to active email inboxes. (Apologies! It's been a long, exhausting off-season for all of us.) If there's anything you sent an email about that you did not get a response to, and you still need or would like a reply to your message, please email us again and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

Four ways to contact us about the information in this post:

jen@fanworkscon.com for questions about registration, policies, or FanWorks 2022, and any other messages for the con chair
fanworksvidtech@gmail.com for vid technical support and questions about Premieres, vid deadlines, or VJing
fanworkszine@gmail.com for anything related to the con zine
fanworksprogramming@gmail.com for questions about programming submission, panels, or vidshow topics

You can also leave a screened comment here, but please be aware that it may take longer to get a reply that way, as sometimes comment notifications can be hit or miss.

There are many ways to contribute to and participate in the virtual con, and plenty of time to do so. Make vids and art! Write and record fic! Brainstorm panels and vidshows! We look forward to seeing what you come up with. And we look forward to seeing you – no participation required; if lurking is your thing, please come lurk with us. Even when we're all just usernames in a con Discord, coming together as a community of fans is something we look forward to every year. We can't wait to see you in October!

Virtual con programming will include many of the staples of our on-site con: 10 hours of panels, a variety of themed and vidder-submitted vidshows, and a con zine.

(We'll also have events, social activities, and a lot of fun stuff yet to be revealed! The traditional con structure will only be one piece of the overall virtual con, but an important one.)

If you're interested in submitting a panel or vidshow or want to send a work to a vidshow or the con zine, please read over this year's deadlines:

*

Programming submissions schedule:

Panel brainstorming begins: August 23rd
Panel submissions open: August 30th
Deadline to submit panels: September 13th
Panels announced: September 20th

Themed vidshow brainstorming begins: August 23rd
Themed vidshow topic submissions open: August 30th
Deadline to submit vidshows: September 6th
Vidshows announced: September 13th

*

Submissions open for vids & the con zine: September 13th

Fanvid submission deadlines:

Zine submission deadlines for fan fiction, fan poetry, podfic and other fan audio, and fan art²

Zine submissions: October 4th

1: "Vidder-submitted" is defined as any vidshow with open submissions, as opposed to themed shows, which are curated by VJs.
2: "Fan art" for zine purposes can include original drawings, paintings, or other 2D art; gifs, manips, and any other remix digital artwork submitted as image files; or photographs of 3D artwork such as knit crafts, textiles, figurines, and other fan-created works.

Important note about vidshow deadlines:

Please note: we're putting the Premieres deadline as close to the con as vid tech allows so that we can give vidders the maximum amount of time to work on vids. We want as many Premieres vids as possible, and welcome submissions from any vidder, regardless of whether or not you register for the virtual con.

However
, because we're pushing the deadline as far back as it can go, there will be no extensions this year. If you find yourself running a few hours late on deadline night, you can contact us at fanworksvidtech@gmail.com and we'll do our best to help; anything more than that, we won't be able to accommodate, as we'll be on a very tight tech schedule. We've built in all the vidding time we can; there is no deadline flexibility this year.

If you have questions about deadlines or anything else, you can email jen@fanworkscon.com.

Brainstorming for panels & themed vidshows will start up in February! Panels can be on any topic to do with fan-made creations or creative activities; vidshows can be on any theme. More info and guidelines on panel & vidshow submission will be coming when brainstorming begins.

In addition to themed vidshows, which are entirely curated by their VJs, FanWorks has a variety of recurring vidshows that will be open for submissions and/or suggestions:

Premieres: Fanvids making their debut at the con. Priority is given to attending vidders, but any vidder is welcome to submit premiering vids to the show.

Sparkle Motion: The con's Saturday night dance party. Sign ups for Sparkle Motion vid premieres will begin soon!

(Reminder: because Sparkle Motion is a dance party, all vid songs for it must be submitted and approved so we can make sure they're danceable. This is a fairly simple process, but please keep in mind that we can't guarantee your song choice will be approved for Sparkle Motion until we know what it is. For this reason, we recommend waiting to start Sparkle Motion vids until after sign-ups begin.)

Variations: Premiering vids made to interpret a theme. The theme for 2020 is "Hindsight." Read more about Variations 2020 here.

The Year in Vids:  A vidshow featuring works from the previous year. Any vid released between September 2019 and the deadline for vid submissions is eligible for this show; submissions are open to all attending and non-attending vidders.

NEW Casual Fridays: A vidshow with a relaxed atmosphere, open to submissions from attending and non-attending vidders. Most of our vidshows take place in a quiet, dark theater-style setting; Casual Fridays is screened in a more informal setting with low lighting and soft conversation.

Submissions and suggestions for vidshows are not yet open; an announcement will be made here when they are.

Deadlines for submissions to FanWorks 2020:

Sparkle Motion: June 7th
Non-premiering vids: June 14th
Zine (fic, podfic, fanart): June 21st
Premieres & Variations vids: June 28th

All deadlines are at 11:59PM Eastern on their respective dates. If you run into deadline trouble, please email fanworksvidtech@gmail.com.
