Door decorations at FanWorks
Aug. 2nd, 2019 04:56 pmIf you will be staying in the FanWorks con hotel, you can decorate your hotel room door! This is completely optional, but is a fun way to show off your fandoms and general fannishness.
Suggestions for decorating your door:
We will have a limited quantity of plain black craft paper available at registration on Thursday night for covering hotel room doors. If you would like to use the con's craft paper for your door decorations, please sign up in advance here.
(If you don't sign up and there is paper still available, you can request it at registration, but quantities are limited and we won't have enough for every con block hotel room door. We recommend requesting it in advance through the form linked above.)
Scissors and a limited quantity of masking tape for covering doors with craft paper will also be available for loan on Thursday night at registration or on Friday by request at the info desk.
Please read on for our full rules/guidelines on door decorations and further information on what you'll need to bring vs. what we'll provide:

Suggestions for decorating your door:
- You can get as crafty with it as you like; maybe you want to make your door look like Bag End, or a Stargate wormhole, or outer space; go wild.
- You can also get not so crafty with it, if you want to decorate more simply! You can put up some of your favorite (G-rated) images from your fandoms (past and present), fannish memes, etc., and boom, your door is decorated.
- Highlight characters or relationships you love, your favorite quotes, locations, starships etc.
- Show off your Hogwarts/Game of Thrones house crests, or anything else you can be fannishly "sorted" into -- someone just suggested the possibility of "Gryffindoors," and we now pass this pun on to you to do with as you will.
- An easy way to safely decorate your door is to cover it (fully or partially) with craft paper and then add decorations over the paper. This tutorial comes schoolteacher-recommended if you're unfamiliar with covering a door with paper. (Disclaimer: we strongly recommend you use masking/painter's tape and not packing tape, and keep in mind you'll need to cut out space for the card reader -- don't accidentally decorate over your way into your room.)

Guidelines for hotel room door decorations:
Content
- Keep in mind that decorations may be seen by guests outside our group. Any and all door decorations should be G-rated. (Essentially: no nudity or overtly sexual content, and no super bloody or violent content. If you have questions like "how much blood is too much," "how much of Hannibal stabbing Will can I show," probably you already know the answers to those questions, but feel free to ask us in comments here or email jen@fanworkscon.com.)
- For safety reasons, we ask that you don't put any identifying information on your door. This includes pseudonyms -- if someone not connected to the con can see it on your door and google it to find out who you are, don't put it there.
- Please don't wallpaper your door with fanfic, even if it's your own.
- Don't decorate your door with anything you would miss if it were gone -- we can't guarantee action figures, fandom memorabilia, etc. won't walk off if you (essentially) leave it in the hallway.
- FanWorks harassment policies extend to all areas of the con including door decorations. Racist, ableist, transphobic, and otherwise offensive material is not acceptable.
Tape, adhesives etc.
- Masking or painter's tape is recommended for attaching things to your door. Don't use anything that will puncture or scratch the door, and don't use any tapes/adhesives that will damage the door or leave adhesive residue behind.
- This also includes stickers. Don't put stickers on your door! (If you want to leave the backs on so the adhesive isn't exposed and just tape the stickers to your door, you can do that, but even then we recommend you be very careful that the backing can't come off and land you with stickers stuck to your hotel room door.)
- If you are using craft paper to cover your door before adding decorations, feel free to use stickers and whatever kind of tape you want on the paper -- just not directly on your door.
- The con isn't responsible for damage to your room door, so if you cover your door in duct tape and run into problems, please keep in mind that's going to be your issue to solve, not the con's.
Materials, Setup and Take Down
- The con does not provide decorations beyond a limited supply of plain black craft paper for covering doors. Any other decorative materials you want to use, bring with you.
- If you sign up to use the con's craft paper, we'll have a pre-cut roll ready for you at registration. This is first-come, first-served, and we will not be able to accommodate every attendee room at the hotel (our stock is just one roll of paper), so please let us know now if you want to use our craft paper for your door. If any paper remains, we'll have it available at registration on request.
- We will have many pairs of scissors available to borrow, so if you are traveling by plane, you don't have to worry about bringing scissors.
- We will have a limited supply of beige masking tape available for use on Thursday night for putting craft paper on doors. For people using craft paper to cover their doors, we will also have a limited supply of double-sided tape for attaching things to the craft paper. Please be aware that we won't be giving out the double-sided tape to anyone not using craft paper on their door. (If your door isn't covered, please don't put double-sided tape on it.) If the tape rolls are all loaned out, we won't immediately be able to provide more, so we recommend bringing your own tape if at all possible so that you can be sure you'll have access to it when you need it.
- Decorations may not last the entire con weekend -- paper tears, things fall off -- and that's okay! If you want to take pictures of your or anyone else's door, do so early in the weekend.
- You are solely responsible for taking down all decorations on your door before you check out of your room. Don't forget to take down your decorations!
We hope people will have fun with this! If you have any questions, please let us know in the comments here.
