The con Discord opens at 8:00pm Eastern tonight!

We expect tonight to be fairly low key, with people trickling in today and tomorrow; there will be some light social events tomorrow, but the "official" start of the con weekend kicks off with Sparkle Motion at 8:00PM Eastern on Friday night.

All registered attendees will get Discord server invites, Zoom links to panel rooms, and access to the streaming vidshows on their FanWorks dashboard.

Please take a moment to refresh yourself on expectations for behavior at the con by (again) reading over the Code of Conduct before joining the con spaces for the weekend.

In all con spaces, if you see anyone violating the code of conduct, otherwise creating unsafe situations or doing harm, or if situations unfold that require intervention, for your own safety, please contact a staff member by sending a message in the #safety channel, emailing safety@fanworkscon.com, or making a report through the Safety Incident Report form rather than trying to intervene yourself. The safety team will be monitoring all three during the con, but if the situation is urgent, we recommend #safety as the quickest way to get a response.

Discord

moderators: Jen, verity, AbsoluteDestiny, additional con staff as needed

Discord will be our weekend home for chat socializing, vidshow watching, staff announcements, event reminders, and more.

In the virtual format, your Discord nickname (username) functions as your badge name. Please make sure your Discord nickname for the FanWorks server matches your con registration, so that we know you're you and that you're suppposed to be there! The Discord is for registered attendees only, and we'll be checking nicknames against the registration list as a safety measure. You can edit your FanWorks nickname by clicking the down arrow next to "FanWorks" above the channel list and clicking "Change Nickname."

We encourage setting your pronouns as your "status" for the weekend, which you can do by clicking your user icon at the bottom left of the chat rooms list and typing into the text box. No one is required to publicly share their pronouns, but this is a quick and effective way for sharing them if you wish to do so.

(Please note that whatever you set your status to will show throughout Discord, including on other servers you're on, so if you don't want your pronouns to be displayed on other servers, don't put them in your status for FanWorks.)

If there are specific channels or categories you want to mute, you can do so by right-clicking (or the equivalent on your system) on the category or channel and clicking "mute category" or "mute channel." This is a highly recommended way to control your Discord experience, particularly with the Fandoms and Topics channels you may not be interested in or that may not be for you.

Embedded images are allowed throughout the con Discord, but there are two rules for images:

  • NSFW images must be kept to #nsfw-still-images or #nsfw-gifs.
  • Gifs can only be embedded in #gifs (in the "Con Suite" category) or #nsfw-gifs (in the "NSFW" category). Any moving images put in other channels will be deleted by moderators. When putting gifs into the appropriate channels, please refrain from embedding gifs with flashing or strobing lights/colors or very rapid image transitions.

The Discord will close to new messages at the end of the day on Monday, October 26th; existing messages will be viewable until the end of the day on Friday, October 30th, at which point the Discord will be turned off.

Triggering Content and Spoilers on Discord

Potentially triggering content should be tagged with content warnings; if you aren't sure what kinds of content might be triggering, you can read the FanWorks standard content notes here: https://fanworkscon.com/content-notes/

Please keep in mind that the list on that page is by no means exhaustive, and there may be many other kinds of triggering content in chat discussions that you may need to warn for.

You can black out links, text, or images by marking it as spoiler. This is useful both for hiding triggering content in channels and for hiding show/movie/book/game spoilers - if you think it might upset someone if you blurt out in #general that Darth Vader is Luke's father, you can spoiler tag it.

There's a quick guide to using spoiler tags on Discord here.

Examples of spoiler tag formatting:

  • cw assault || [comments] || -- shows the content warning before the spoiler block so that people can decide whether or not to click
  • Star Trek Discovery spoiler || [spoilers] || -- shows the spoilered source before the spoiler block so that people can decide whether or not to click
  • /spoiler [comments] -- blocks out entire message, not recommended unless as part of a conversation where the topic is already known
  • click "mark as spoiler" when uploading an attachment to hide the image/video/link as a spoiler (only works on desktop)

If you want to see the content under a spoiler tag, you can click it to reveal. If you want to turn off spoiler tags entirely and venture in tag-free, you can do this in your account settings under Text & Images > Show Spoiler Content.

Discord Channels

The channels (chat rooms) on the con Discord are separated into a handful of categories:

  • Information Desk: This is where you will find channels to reach a staff member (#ask-the-staff) or report a safety issue (#safety), read the Discord rules (#rules) and staff announcements (#staff-announcements), and where you can find a link (#self-assigned-roles) to Roleypoly, which will let you customize your Discord experience.

  • For example, if you go to Roleypoly through the provided link, log in with your Discord account, and tick the Notification boxes for "Vidshow Notifications" or "Panel Notifications," you'll receive alerts in Discord when vidshows or panels are about to begin. This is a quick, easy step to help you get more out of the con weekend!

  • Con Suite: For all of your general socialization needs! Say hello upon arrival in #the-lobby, chat on anything and everything in #general, organize your own Zoom hang-out or viewing party in #room-parties, find a game to join in #gaming, chat about the con zine in #zine-discussion, or drop a gif in #gifs.

  • Events: We've highlighted two of our key weekend events here: #sparkle-motion-east, #sparkle-motion-west, and #sparkle-motion-sober on Friday night, and #premieres on Saturday night. Channels for nighttime games will be added here throughout the weekend as needed.

  • If you are drinking or otherwise intoxicated during Sparkle Motion, please stay out of #sparkle-motion-sober! The sober channel is intended for just that: people who need a space free from alcohol, marijuana, or other intoxicants in which to enjoy the dance party show. If you are inebriated, that space is not for you. If you plan on being inebriated during Sparkle Motion, we recommend you go ahead and mute #sparkle-motion-sober so that you don't wander into it by accident.

  • Tracks: If you want to discuss #art-and-crafting, #audio (including podfic and podcasting), #community (including fanwork exchanges and meta), #video (including vidding), or #writing, there are individual channels for each of our traditional fanwork tracks!

  • NSFW: Discord policies require that all NSFW content be put into specially designated channels.

There are four channels under the NSFW category: #nsfw-general, #nsfw-fanfic, and #nsfw-still-images, and #nsfw-gifs. Any images should be kept to the #nsfw-still-images and #nsfw-gifs channels (depending on the kind of image), whether embedded or linked out.

When you click on any of these channels for the first time, Discord will prompt you for your birthdate (if it has not already done so on another server for your account) to verify your age, as NSFW channels are restricted to 18+. If you accidentally give it a birthdate under 18, the process for proving your real age to Discord is cumbersome, so check twice before you submit your birthdate.

  • Panels: There are channels set up for each scheduled panel at the con. During the Zoom panels, the Discord channels will be the place for attendees to discuss amongst themselves via chat; you can also ask questions that the staff Zoom hosts will pass on to panelists.

  • Please try not to use these channels for general discussion, particularly before the panels begin!

  • Themed Vidshows / Additional Vidshows: Each vidshow has a channel set up. These channels will be where we'll watch the vidshows together! The vidshows will begin promptly on the hour, and the VJ will be in the channel to call out the name of each vid as it starts, to help the chat follow along (and to make it easier to catch up later if you're reading up after the vidshow ends).

  • You are welcome to react to the vids as they play, to clap (or clap emoji!) at the end of each vid, and to generally enjoy the shared vidshow experience! This has been a great way to watch vids together at cons throughout the year, and we highly encourage joining the vidshow channels if you love vids and want to watch any shows as they air live.

  • Fandoms and Topics: This category is for channels by request. If you want to ask for a channel for a specific fandom or genre, for a particular fanwork exchange, for a more specific kind of fan craft than our track panels - or for not (necessarily!) fannish topics like pets, gardening, cooking, identity-related topics, etc. - you can request room in the #request-a-room channel.

  • We may not approve every channel request - if a channel would be very similar to one that already exists, if the topic of a request violates the Code of Conduct, or for any other reason at moderator discretion.

Zoom

hosts: elipie, Milly, AbsoluteDestiny, additional con staff as needed

Most con panels will be taking place on Zoom, with the exception of the Fashionably Late panel at 4:00pm on Saturday, which will take place on Discord as a chat panel.

Invites to Zoom panel rooms will be available on the FanWorks dashboard, and will be pinned to Discord channels. If you are not a panelist, your microphone will be muted, and people will be individually unmuted when called upon during Q&A or to offer thoughts in a panel discussion. For the chat feature, we'll be using Discord channels. All Zoom panels will be hosted by con staff members elipie and Milly, who will be monitoring the Discord panel channels to relay questions to panelists.

No one is required to turn on their camera in a Zoom room; if you want to hang out with your camera off, you are certainly welcome to do so. When you are on camera - whether in a panel, in a game, for a social event, or at any other time in an official con room - please keep in mind that others can see you. We don't care if you show up to a panel in your PJs, or if your surroundings are messy, or if your cat unexpectedly joins you - you're at home! Be comfortable! But please be considerate of your fellow attendees: wear clothing, turn off flashing lights, try not to set up your camera in front of your excellent collection of explicit fanart.

Vidshows

VJ coordinators: sweetestdrain (Saturday), SDWolfpup (Sunday)

Vidshow streaming will be slightly different this year! If you streamed any vidshows from FanWorks 2019, the interface will look very similar, but playback options have changed.

  • Before a vidshow starts, you can click to autoplay a show. The show will then begin automatically at its scheduled start time.

  • If you are joining a vidshow late while it is streaming live, you will be given the option to either start from the beginning or to join the live stream in progress.

  • While a show is playing live, you will not be able to skip ahead of the current / live point in the show. If you think your stream has fallen behind, you can refresh and join the live point in the show.

  • Once a vidshow is over, it can be played from the beginning, and you can skip ahead to any point in the show you like.
This playback format is designed to keep everyone synced on the live vidshows, so that we can watch together and be (roughly!) coordinated throughout the show.

Vidshow streams will remain available for at least three months after the con.
