Register for FanWorks 2021

Registration for the 2021 virtual con is now open! The con will be happening online October 1 - 3, 2021.

Registration costs $20, which covers the cost of paid virtual platforms used during the con and helps off-set the annual costs of existing as a con until we can get back in person.

You can register here: https://fanworkscon.com/register/

If you are not already logged into your FanWorks account, you will be prompted to log in or create an account before you can register.

Please note that virtual con registration is independent of any other con registration; if you are registered to attend the 2022 Chicago FanWorks because of a 2020 con reg rollover, you will still need to separately register for the 2021 virtual con.

Registration will be open at least until the con weekend begins, and includes access to all con spaces (primarily the con Discord) and live programming (via Discord and Zoom), as well as all streaming vidshows, the con zine, and other con materials (via the FanWorks dashboard).

FanWorks runs on Eastern time. Panel programming, games, and events are live (not pre-recorded or available afterward), so please keep that in mind when registering if you are in another time zone. Streaming vidshows are available to view any time after the show's scheduled time (for at least three months after the con), and Sunday morning includes a Premieres replay for people in earlier time zones.

Vid Submissions

Vid submissions for FanWorks 2021 are also now open! There are four shows you can submit your vids to at FanWorks this year. They are:

Premieres

The Premieres show is the highlight of the video track at FanWorks! Vids sent to this show must not have been released anywhere previously - at other cons, as online posts, or to any audience larger than your betas / cheerleaders. Premieres is all-new, with every vid making its debut to the con audience.

(The added interactivity of the virtual con format has been a lot of fun at our con and others, so we highly encourage you to send your vids and join us on Discord for the show!)

The Year in Vids

Any vid released since last year's con (October 2020) is eligible for this vidshow. Show us what you've been working on this year!

Vidder's Choice

Any vid previously released at any point in time is eligible for this vidshow. How you choose is up to you! Is there a vid you've always wanted to show to a captive audience? Is there a vid you love watching with company? You can send in anything you like (so long as you made it!).

Comfort Blanket

This year's open submissions themed show is "Comfort Blanket." Which of your vids give you the most warm fuzzies? Which do you go back to when you need something comforting to watch?

(We tried this out last year with "Please Scream Inside Your Vid," and it worked really well! This is essentially a themed show, but a vidder-submitted one, rather than a VJ-curated one.)

What vids you find comforting may differ from what other people find comforting, and that's fine! There aren't any restrictions on content or tone. When VJing the show, we'll try to split up the vids by comfort type, rather than alternating soft kitten warm fuzzies with murder warm fuzzies (for example), so don't hesitate to send in whatever you feel fits this theme.

Vid submission deadlines:

The Year in Vids, Vidder's Choice, Comfort Blanket, and themed shows: Sunday, August 15th
Premieres: Sunday, September 5th

Deadlines are 11:59PM Eastern.

Please note that we are very unlikely to grant extensions on Premieres, as our vid tech schedule is very compact; if you run into any emergencies or delays, please email us ASAP at fanworksvidtech@gmail.com and we will do our best to help.

How to submit a vid:

Vids should be encoded with LlamaEnc if at all possible.

(LlamaEnc is an easy to use piece of software written by AbsoluteDestiny to encode vids into high quality con format for online streaming & playback on our con boxes.)

If you're unable to encode with LlamaEnc, the recommended file format is

  • H.264 mp4, level 4.1 high profile
  • frame size of 1920x1080 or smaller
  • fps of 60fps or less

(We will almost always have to re-encode audio not encoded by LlamaEnc, but those settings will get your video as close to LlamaEnc's output as possible.)

When logged in to your FanWorks account, you can submit vids from your dashboard (https://fanworkscon.com/dashboard).

If you do not already have a FanWorks account, you can click the "create an account here" link on the log-in page, or click here to go directly to the account creation page: https://fanworkscon.com/account/sign-up/?next=/dashboard/

The vid submission page (which will not show if you are not logged in) is here: https://fanworkscon.com/works/vid/create/

The form will ask you if you are submitting your own vid or uploading a vid for someone else, and will ask you for the vid's information and content notes. Content notes haven't changed since last year; you can see our current list of standard content notes here: https://fanworkscon.com/content-notes/.

You'll see lots of other vidshows in the drop-down menu on the submissions page, but keep in mind that themed shows are only accepting pre-approved submissions by request from show VJs.

How many vids you can submit:

Vidders can submit up to two vids per show (and can show up to three vids, if a third is submitted by a co-vidder); vids must be your own work.

You will be asked to submit your vids as first or second priority. What that means in practice is:

Premieres: We guarantee that we will show every first priority vid submitted by an attending vidder in the Premieres show.

We may roll over second priority attending premieres or any non-attending premieres to an Also Premiering show if the Premieres submissions run significantly over time. (If you send us a premiering vid, we'll make sure we show it at FanWorks! Just please be aware that your second priority or non-attending vid may debut in Also Premiering rather than the main Premieres show if we run short on time.)

Non-premiering shows: We guarantee that we will show every first priority vid submitted by an attending vidder, even if it makes the vidshow run long.

After that, second priority attending vids and first priority non-attending vids will be selected at the VJs' discretion to fill out the show if needed, typically chosen to help the flow of the vidshow, to even out the overall tone, to provide variety, and so on. Second priority non-attending vids will be shown if all other vids have already been included in the show and time allows.

Whether or not you are registered for FanWorks may affect how we prioritize your vids, as priority is always given to attending vidders - but you do not have to be registered when you submit vids, so long as you're registered before the vid submission deadline passes. If you want to submit vids now and register later, you can!

The zine isn't yet open for submissions, but will be soon - we'll announce here and on Twitter when zine submissions open.

If you have any questions about registration, please email jen@fanworkscon.com. If you have any questions about vid submissions, please email fanworksvidtech@gmail.com.
