FanWorks is going ahead in Chicago, IL this year, August 12 - 14, 2022!
There's a lot to cover in this announcement, but we'll try to keep it brief (for now). More detailed info will be coming soon!
- What to Expect from FanWorks Chicago 2022 -
There's a lot we have to work out yet as far as programming, events, and covid safety measures. We're going to have as complete a picture of these things as we can for you before registration opens in March, so that you know what you can expect before registering to attend.
Here are some things we can tell you now:
- Registering for FanWorks Chicago 2022-
If you registered for the Chicago 2020 con, your registration remains active for the Chicago 2022 con. We'll be emailing a survey to all currently registered attendees soon; through the survey, you can let us know how likely you are to attend in Chicago this August and share any thoughts, concerns, or ideas you might have, so that we can get an idea of where our attendees are at.
New registration for Chicago 2022 will open in March – we'll announce the specific date/time at least a week in advance. Registrations from 2020 will be counted against the cap first, and we'll announce how many spots remain before registration opens.
All con registration is nonrefundable. This has been true since the con started in 2019, with the exception of the one-time refund window offered in 2020 when the Chicago con was postponed.
In the event the con is not held in Chicago this year, any registrations active when the con is postponed will be advanced to the rescheduled con, as was the case in 2020. (In the interests of transparency, we have very little power to further postpone the Chicago con, so if the con were rescheduled, it would be due to events outside our control.)
Con registration otherwise cannot be rolled forward; we aren't sure yet when or where our next in-person con event will be, so outside of a complete con reschedule, we don't want to promise future registrations to events we haven't planned yet.
- FanWorks Minicon Fundraiser: April 9, 2022 -
FanWorks is doing a virtual minicon on April 9th!
This is a limited online event to fundraise for FanWorks Chicago 2022. The virtual minicon will feature:
The fundraiser is to help us build a hotel coverage fund. FanWorks is contracted for a minimum number of hotel rooms that have to be filled each night of the con; as you might imagine, the numbers we contracted for in late 2019 may not exactly match up to the number of rooms we fill in 2022. A coverage fund will help us off-set any potential shortfalls, whether from a lower-than-normal number of room reservations or from cancellations due to covid the weekend of the con itself.
This is an important part of our con planning for 2022. In order to meet our contract requirements, stay financially viable, and continue to put on future events, we need a safety net. We expect to have a lower-than-normal attendance cap this year, so that we can better implement covid safety measures; that means we'll also be working with less con registration revenue than usual, so our ability to build a coverage fund out of registration fees will be limited.
This is where you come in!
Registration for the April minicon starts at $10. All registration fees are donations to the con fundraiser; if you want to write in a higher amount to make a larger donation, you can do that at registration.
We'll also be raffling off prizes, which will be sent to winners by mail (we don't know yet if this will be restricted to domestic mail or if we'll be able to ship internationally, but we'll have that worked out before the raffle opens!). The raffle will be run through the FanWorks con dashboard; raffle tickets will go on sale during the event weekend.
We'll have more info on raffle prize donations in a separate post, but for now: if you are interested in donating new-in-box fannish merch, fanart prints, or other similar materials for the raffle, please email raffle@fanworkscon.com! (Any printed materials must be your own artwork, zine, etc.; you're otherwise free to donate materials not made by you.)
Registration for the April minicon fundraiser opens next Saturday, February 19th on fanworkscon.com.

- FanWorks has reserved all of the event space in the SpringHill hotel: four rooms on the second floor (the main con space), two rooms on the first floor. We'll have plenty of space to sprawl out in for panels, vidshows, events, and socializing.
- There will be an online con alongside the in-person con. We're still hammering out details on how exactly we want a new hybrid con model to work, but you can expect a con Discord, streaming vidshows, and online-exclusive content.
- We've missed seeing all of you, meeting new people, sharing fannish space! We want this to be a fun space to come together in, and our goal is to do that as safely as we can under the circumstances.
- Proof of vaccination will be required for anyone attending the Chicago con. (This will be true at least for the con itself, and may also be true for the con hotel; at the moment, the SpringHill requires proof of vaccination for all event guests, but that may or may not still be true in August.)
- Masks will be required in all con spaces. We're going to be treating your mask the same as your badge this year: if you're in the con space without it on, we're going to make you go back to your room and get it.
- For those who remember the many snacks and buffets from FanWorks 2019: at this point, it looks likely we'll be switching to a grab-and-go boxed lunch model for our food & beverage offerings, but this is still in the air; one way or another there will be some meals included in your ticket cost, and we'll have a clearer idea of what that will look like before registration opens.

- FanWorks Minicon Fundraiser: April 9, 2022 -
FanWorks is doing a virtual minicon on April 9th!
This is a limited online event to fundraise for FanWorks Chicago 2022. The virtual minicon will feature:
- Discord: like our full virtual cons, the action will be focused on a minicon Discord server with channels for socializing, watching vidshows, participating in panels, and important info from con staff. The Discord server will open on the night of Friday, April 8th, and will remain open through Sunday night.
- Panels: Zoom panels during the day on April 9th
- Vid Premieres: a Premieres vidshow the evening of April 9th
- Vidshows: vidder-submitted vidshows playing during the day on April 9th; depending on submission levels, these may also continue onto April 10th
- Access to past con vidshows: streams of FanWorks vidshows from 2019, 2020, and 2021 will be available to all minicon attendees throughout the con weekend
The fundraiser is to help us build a hotel coverage fund. FanWorks is contracted for a minimum number of hotel rooms that have to be filled each night of the con; as you might imagine, the numbers we contracted for in late 2019 may not exactly match up to the number of rooms we fill in 2022.
