What is the FanWorks Con Fan Auction?
The FanWorks Auction is a fundraising auction to support the FanWorks convention. All funds donated through the auction will help the con purchase A/V equipment; upgrade things like food & beverage offerings, con decor, and the dance floor; and expand the con suite with more space, snacks, and games.
What is the FanWorks convention?
FanWorks is a new annual convention for anyone who loves fan creations such as fanfic, podfic, vids, art, cosplay, crafts, and much more. You can learn more about FanWorks on the con website.
How does the auction work?
Creators will be able to sign-up to offer works (fic, art, podfic, vids, and other things like beta and Brit-picking services) from March 26 until April 7. Creators can offer up to three works to be bid on, in any fandoms or media. On April 10, all the sign-ups will become visible and anyone will be able to bid on the creators’ offers. Bidding will be open until April 14. You may bid on as many things as you’re willing to pay for! After April 14, staff will contact winning bidders and confirm their payments, before putting bidders and creators in contact with one another.
When can I sign up to offer fanworks? When can I start bidding?
Tuesday, March 26: Creator sign-ups open (HERE!)
Sunday, April 7: Creator sign-ups close
Wednesday, April 10, 1:00PM UTC: Bidding opens (What time is that for me?)
Sunday, April 14, 11:59PM UTC: Bidding closes (What time is that for me?)
Saturday, April 20: Deadline for winning bidders to donate
Saturday, April 27: Deadline for creators to contact their winning bidders
Sunday, July 7: Deadline for any created vids wishing to premiere at the convention
Monday, October 14: Deadline for all fanworks to be given to winning bidders
What types of fanwork can I offer?
The auction is open to five categories of fanwork:
★ fic
★ fanvids
★ art, including digitally made art, scanned art, manips, gifs, etc
★ podfic
★ fan labor, including beta services
Each of these categories is intentionally broad so that the auction can encompass as many kinds of fanworks as possible. When participants sign up, they will be asked to select all categories they’re offering and describe the specific types of fanworks they’re offering (what kind of art, what kind of fan labor, etc).
Can I offer more than one thing?
Yes. You can have up to three (3) separate offers in the auction. You may include multiple types of fanwork in each offer. Please be mindful, though, of how many assignments you can actually fulfill, and only commit to offering fanworks you are sure you can complete.
How many fandoms can I offer to create for?
You can offer as many fandoms as you feel able to create for.
I’ve already started a work similar to my bidder’s prompt, or I’m planning on writing a work similar to it for a big bang or other challenge. Can I just use that to fulfill my auction?
Your top priority is creating something made especially for your bidder and with their tastes in mind. Your fanwork should be a new creation made only for this auction.
That said, if your bidder (for example) wants you to make a vid or write fic but doesn’t have specific ideas in mind, it’s fine to ask them if they want to hear about vid songs or fic concepts you already have but haven’t started yet. If what your bidder wants is for you to continue a previous work and that is agreeable to you, that’s also fine. Just make sure you’re creating something specifically for your bidder, made to their specifications.
What about fan crafts? Why can’t I auction off fan crafts as part of the auction?
Because of the added complication of shipping costs and the possibility of objects getting lost in transit, we are not able to take on the added responsibility of overseeing their exchange.
What are the deadlines for fanworks to be given to winning bidders?
Any vidders wishing to have their auction vids shown at the con must submit them as premiering vids (which cannot be released online prior to their debut at the con) by the premiering vid deadline of July 7th. All other works (including vids not premiered at the con) must be completed by October 14th, six months from the end date of the auction. If you aren't certain that you can complete a work by the October 14th deadline, please do not sign up to participate. We appreciate anyone who wants to help the con, but if you can't come through on what you've offered, that only creates problems for the auction staff later on.
Do I need to join the FanWorks Dreamwidth community in order to take part in the auction?
You don’t have to join to participate. All of our posts will be public, and the auction itself takes place entirely on the con website. We do however encourage you to follow the community to stay updated, so that you don’t miss the start of the auction or our reminders before bidding ends.
What if I want to change things in my signup?
If you realize after you click send that you need to make changes, you can drop us an email here.
This is amazing! Can I advertise for the auction?
Yes, you can! Our advertisement post is here, with beautiful graphics by
Wow, some of these pages seem really familiar.
The auction staff would like to thank Fandom Trumps Hate and its staff for their help with setting up the FanWorks Con Fan Auction. Templates and things that look awfully familiar have been used with permission. If you’re interested in running your own fan auction, they have a wonderful guide which you can read about and request here (at the bottom of the post).
